Meta’s Plans for the Quest 4 and Quest Pro 2
Despite recent layoffs in its Reality Labs division, Meta continues to forge ahead with plans for new iterations of its Quest line of VR headsets. According to The Information, Meta is planning to release the Quest 4 in 2026 and a higher-end Quest Pro 2 in 2027.
Timelines and Variants
The forthcoming Quest 4 will reportedly come in two versions: a standard variant referred to internally as “Pismo Low” and a premium version known as “Pismo High.” A higher-end model, codenamed “La Jolla,” is slated for 2027 and is intended to compete directly with the Apple Vision Pro. Additionally, a more affordable headset, codenamed “Ventura,” might make its debut later this year.
Augmented Reality Glasses
Meta is also planning to introduce a pair of AR glasses that include a bona fide display. However, there are doubts about these glasses due to their bulky design, which deviates significantly from the current Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses. The new glasses are rumored to weigh around 70 grams, making them less likely to carry the Ray-Ban branding.
Challenges in AR Glasses Design
The issue of AR glasses being bulky is not new and has been a significant barrier to consumer adoption. The challenge lies in miniaturizing displays to a comfortable size while maintaining adequate battery life and power. Most companies have found it difficult to balance these aspects, often compromising on style, which is critical for broader consumer appeal.
Budget Adjustments and R&D Cuts
Meta’s Reality Labs division, responsible for the Quest headsets and Ray-Ban Smart Glasses, is expected to face a 20% budget cut in R&D by 2026. Despite these cuts, Reality Labs has shown substantial growth, with a 30% increase in revenue in recent quarters primarily driven by Quest headset sales. This combination of budget reduction and revenue growth might be Meta’s strategy to make Reality Labs profitable finally.
Meta’s aggressive roadmap for the Quest 4 and Quest Pro 2, along with multiple AR glasses in development, signifies the company’s commitment to innovation in the VR and AR markets.
